DC Co-Publisher Dan DiDio made official today the expected announcement of another DC September event for 2014, revealing that all DC ongoing series that month will flash forward five years to depict what might happen in the future.
The event ties into the May-launching weekly series The New 52: Futures End , and DiDio said DC will launch some new ongoing titles in June and/or July that will also be included in the September event.
DiDio emphasized that DC fans who aren't reading the weekly will still get a lot of hints about the future for each of their existing ongoing series.
"It gives some exciting teases of potential storylines that might be coming for our characters in the near future ," DiDio said of the event. "These stories aren't going to just be tied into the weekly. But what you'll be seeing is a lot of the writers who are working on series right now projecting forward — their ideas, their storylines, where they think their character might be five years from now.
"We really wanted to show things that seem like the logical progression of the characters and where the story lines are going," he said.
The event will also lead into a new weekly series launching October , which Newsarama also exclusively revealed..
The executive revealed details about the Futures End event during an interview with Newsarama that was timed to announcements being made at today's national meeting of the ComicsPRO retailers association.
DiDio also revealed one of the 3D motion covers that will be available on comics in the September Futures End event. While last year's Villains Month event incorporated variant 3D covers that DiDio said sold "extraordinarily well," he said the 2014 covers are more complex because the characters will be changing.
"All the lenticular covers — all the Futures End stories that will be told in September — will be in the titles of the ongoing series," DiDio said. "The covers now will also have the ability to have a 'flicker' effect. That means that the images change and show the transformation going on. … There is a level of change that is taking place with our characters during the course of this story."
All covers — both the 3D and 2D covers (standard) — for the September Futures End tie-ins will have order dates at the same time on May 29th. There will be no "final order cut-off" date for the titles.
"We had a chance to work with a number of retailers," DiDio said. "We heard what their concerns were. And we figure we came out with a structure and plan right now that I think allows everybody to feel confident in how to order these things, to make sure that the right amount of books are on the shelf."
Since the company launched 52 new and renumbered titles in September 2011, DC has followed up with a line-wide September event every year since, presumably to attempt to match the month's sales of the previous year.
"What it does is it gives you a chance to reset the line a little bit and see where your strengths and weaknesses are," DiDio said of the annual September event. "And if you look at what we did, we launched the New 52, which re-established the heroes in a new direction, voice and continuity. That's where we started.
"So what we've done [since then] is… we've looked at the heroes [with Zero Month in 2012], we've looked at the villains [with 2013's Villains Month], and now we're looking toward the future," he said.
"Ultimately, what you're going to see is the potential of where the futures can be going," he said. "And also, I'd like to say, what direct impact it has on stories set in the current timeline in the DCU."
